Follow the steps outlined below to copy the complete tree structure of your project tree from one instance to another using the Excel add-in.

Prerequisites

Before anything, please make sure that you have installed the add-in. See the following page for installation instructions – R4J MS Excel Plugin.

To get an idea on how to use the plugin, have a look at the user guide.

Definition

  • source instance – the instance you are copying the project tree structure from.
  • destination instance – the instance you are copying the project tree structure to.

Part 1: Load data from source instance

  1. Open an excel file, go to the Jira ribbon and click on Settings. In the settings dialog, make sure the correct Jira Server URL and credentials for your source instance are setup. Test the connection.
  2. If test is successful, click OK to save the settings.
  3. Click on Load Data and select from the project list.
  4. Include all desired JIRA fields as selected fields in configuring fields for import.
    (warning) Important: Select Requirement Path field if you want to copy the tree structure. 
  5. After selecting fields, click on Finish. This will load all issues from your source instance to the excel file.

Part 2: Upload data to destination instance


  1. After the issues from the source instance have been loaded, go to the Jira ribbon in excel and click on Settings
    (warning) Important: Update the configuration to the correct Jira Server URL and credentials for the destination instance. Test the connection.
  2. If test is successful, click OK to save the settings.
  3. Before uploading, modify Requirement Path and Project Key values as needed to be imported into the destination instance.
    (warning) Important: Clear all data under Key column to import issues into destination instance as new issues.
  4. When done with modifications, click on Upload Data. A result log will be shown once upload is finished. Should there be any upload errors, you will see it in the log.
